"... she painted a family “life” portrait for me to give Kenn for Christmas. He was so surprised. She not only painted us, but included representations of all the things that make us who we are…our children, flying dachshunds, my art, Kenn’s Mr. Fix It personality, water, secret paths, our home, music, and our faith. I do found object art, and Paula added screws, nails and cogs to make the tree, along with other sculptural effects throughout the painting."

Original Art

36" x 18" Original Artwork by local Chicago-based artist Paula Clayton, or one of our other DGB associated artists whose work you like, to honor the heart of your story and celebrate your connections and memories.

We meet with you on Zoom or a creative session on the phone to find out what you would like to have as a great way to remember your important person, and if we're a fit to make that happen for you.

Various Techniques Available
Being artists we like to get our hands on everything & see how far we can push it, and then some.
Here are some of our fun textures and interesting use of objects. Rollover an image to see a brief description of each techniques.

Here’s how it works…
-
First you will schedule an informational phone call or zoom meeting with Paula to discuss your project. Paula will walk you through the project and answer your questions so that you can decide whether to move forward.
-
If you move forward with a custom artwork, whether an urn or a life portrait, the next step will be to meet with Paula by phone or zoom to brainstorm. You may consider questions like: What are your favorite colors? What are some cool family stories? What are you proud of, what represents you?
-
Next, you will provide Paula with any photos, artworks, or other items that inform the final artwork that you’d like to see. Items may be delivered in person, by mail or emailed.
-
Paula will then complete a rough sketch for you to review to see if you like the basic layout for the artwork. You will supply Paula with your thoughts.
-
At this time you will provide Paula with the first payment, a $250 deposit. This deposit pays for the next step, the rough watercolor draft, and is not refundable.
-
Paula will then complete a rough watercolor draft of the artwork for you to review. If you have changes you’d like to see made, you will inform Paula at this time. Anything not quite right? Want to add something? Not sure about the color? The more precise you are in communicating your desires or concerns, the better.
-
The second payment is made at this time and Paula will begin the actual painting. Depending on the project, Paula will show you the painting in process one or two times. You will be able to make final “tweaks” during this phase.
-
Final payment is made and the order is delivered.

“When I dropped off Paula’s life portrait to our hospice patient, Micki, it was a gift to me as well. I’ll never forget the love and joy I was witness to in that moment. Micki was bedbound and, we thought, no longer able to speak. When her daughter Donna and I held her portrait in front of her she surprised us both by saying, “My, my, my, my, my”. We started to take the painting away and she lifted her arm to stop us….she wasn’t done looking at it! It was such a sweet moment. Donna, her daughter couldn’t have been more touched. With tears in her eyes she described to me how very grateful she was to Paula for giving her this special portrait honoring her mom… and for the special moment she had just shared with her mom.”

Knowing you did something special and meaningful
Having a touchstone of memory that truly reflects the story of a life well lived
Being listened to, and your ideas brought to life
Going beyond the standard options to find a way to properly honor the individuality of your loved one.

• Traditional portraits are nice, but you want something that reflects the myriad of ways you love and connect with your person, pet, or family.
• You're not looking for average. You've got a light, and you want to share it, to continue to be inspired by joy, connections, and achievements. You want art with soul.
• You have something like an allergic reaction to normal (toes curl, hackles raise) so you are delighted when you can be heard and your ideas properly expressed outside of cookie-cutter norms.
• When you can do something amazing, you're not going to settle for "good enough".

- Paula, and the other artists of DGB
"… art helps the ambiance at home feel more serene and tranquil. When I’m at my busiest and feeling overwhelmed, I like to lay on the floor and stare up at Paula's paintings for a few minutes. " - Dana C.
"Art provides companionship in times of isolation and it provides self-affirmation in times of self-doubt. It is both a safe place and a place of challenges. It is in art that we find ultimate beauty not in conformity but in the possibilities that otherwise only nature can imagine." - Mary S.
“Art makes your soul sing and adds something spectacular to the world. Paula does the most beautiful artwork, she can be trusted to create something special and unique to honor a wonderful life. Paula is a joy to work with, a kindhearted woman, you’re in good hands. “ - Traci C.
